Some people avoid using glass containers because they will allow light in. Plastic is avoided since it can be porous.
Lighter, less-fermented teas lose their freshness quicker than darker, fermented teas. Lighter teas, such as green teas, should not be stored longer than one year. However, darker teas will have a shelf life of up to two years if properly stored. With time, tea's flavor will diminish.
Tea is affected by light, moisture and temperature changes. Tea will absorb whatever odors are around it, such as spices. Because of this, it is important to store tea in a tightly sealed container or canister that is free of any odors. Keep the container in a cool dry place with low humidity that is not in direct sunlight. Tea should not be refrigerated or frozen.
Some commonly used containers are:
Classic tea tins filled to the top and covered
